Sanchez, Allen. (2015) Carlsbad. Excerpt from KRQE (Cheyenne Cope, 09/08/2015): He believes violence against police is getting
worse, pointing to the 24 law enforcement officers who have been shot to death in the U.S. just this year. One being the
ambush of Deputy Darren Goforth in Houston who was pumping gas at the time. “And the guy comes up behind him and just
starts shooting him, even while he’s down just keeps shooting rounds at his body and there’s just no need for that you know,”
said Sanchez. Detective Allen Sanchez is a long-time veteran at the Carlsbad Police Department…Detective Sanchez has been
with the Carlsbad Police Department for 15 years. He says when he first joined the force he only knew one officer who had ever
been involved in a shooting. After a string of deadly ambushes on police officers around the country, a New Mexico police
officer is taking to Facebook to let everyone know what it’s like to be a cop…It just bothered me just to see that people would
target us because they have an opinion of us and they lump us all together and I just don’t think it’s right,” said Sanchez. He
ended his post by asking the bad guys to give officers a break and to stop taking the lives of his brother and sisters. He adds, “If
you need a friend or an ear, even a sincere embrace, i’m here for you. Talk to me. Before you make the choice to take one of us
out of spite. I love you. Let me prove it to you. Let’s stop all this nonsense.” Detective Sanchez says the post has gotten quite a
bit of attention with people applauding him for his words and praying for his safety. http://krqe.com/2015/09/08/carlsbad-

their car. Excerpt from Justice dot gov-2016-07/13: Vidal Sandoval, 46, of Cimarron, N.M., pleaded guilty this morning to a
superseding indictment charging him with drug trafficking and theft of government property charges. Sandoval was a Deputy
of the Colfax County Sheriff’s Department at the time he committed the crimes. The guilty plea was entered without the
benefit of a plea agreement. Excerpt Santa Fe NM-2016/07/13: Federal prosecutors charged the acquaintance, Leon Herrera, 37,
with impersonating a federal agent. Herrera, formerly the police chief of Springer, pleaded guilty in October 2015. A judge

Sholtis, Tom (10/31/2001) Albuquerque. Officer. Violence. Excerpt from Real Crimes Corruption Overview: Off-duty Albuquerque
police officer, Tom Sholtis, encountered Deena Tanberg, (the wife of an Albuquerque FBI agent), chatting with a woman friend in
a public park after hours. Sholtis ordered the two women to come toward him, and when they didn’t instantly comply, Sholtis
“violently slammed Deena Tanberg to the ground, fracturing her arm and causing her ligament damage.” The audiotape from
Officer Sholtis’s belt-mounted recorder reflects that he grabbed Deena and broke her arm within 20 seconds of first
encountering her, before she had even determined that Sholtis was, indeed, a law enforcement officer.

Threlkeld, Eric K. Carlsbad (2017) Letter to editor in Current Argus (Carlsbad news) on preventing domestic violence
Excerpt from Argus 10/24/2017: I began my career as a police officer in 1986. At that time there was no domestic violence
shelter in the town I worked in. The best that a victim could hope for was that there was enough money in the chaplains’ fund
to get one night in a cheap motel. If an officer responded to your home for a domestic violence call, he would often tell the
victim to leave the house, and ask misguided questions like 'Why do you stay here anyway? Why do you put up with it? What
did you do to make him angry?' Or make detrimental statements like, “If I have to come back here one more time tonight,
someone is going to jail.” Domestic violence was, for far too long, seen as a lesser offense, and frequently treated like a private
matter. Victims were often just sent home from the hospital without intervention, children were left to suffer in silence. And as
a consequence, abuse could go on for years. In many cases the violence only ended with the death of a woman or a child.

Utley, Shane. Farmington. Captain. Excerpt Abq Journal 08/31/2015, By Dan Schwartz / The Daily Times:
FARMINGTON — A New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy official has determined that a former San Juan County Sheriff’s
Office captain lied in investigations of his alleged use of department-issued ammunition in a trade for an off-road motorcycle.
The ammunition — four boxes of Black Hills .223 match grade bullets and 50 rounds of Federal 12-gauge buckshot — was
valued at between $180 and $250, according to the records. The ammunition boxes were also stamped with an identification
number that matched rounds kept in the Sheriff’s Office SWAT truck, according to the records. Utley testified in the hearing
that he didn’t know the ammunition belonged to the Sheriff’s Office and that Capt. Brice Current had given it to him, according
to the records. But Hearing Officer Peter Camacho stated in the records that Utley “knew or should have known” the
ammunition belonged to the Sheriff’s Office. Current also denies he gave Utley the ammunition, according to the records.
Current, former-Undersheriff Ron Anderson, the sheriff’s office, and the county and its board of commissioners are also named
as defendants in the lawsuit against Christesen. https://www.abqjournal.com/636929/state-law-enforcement-academy-finds-

Valencia, Jose (2010) Santa Fe police/Pecos related incident. Detective. Guns/drug dealer/revealing undercover agent. Possible
retaliation by higher ups for reporting corruption and not participating in cover-ups. Excerpt from Abq Journal (2010): SANTA FE
— A Santa Fe cop may end up losing his badge after he was caught on an FBI tape promising a gun to a drug dealer "who clearly
conveyed his intent to commit murder," according to police documents. Santa Fe police Detective Jose Valencia — who was the
police union president at the time the conversation was caught on tape two years ago — was recommended for termination by
Chief Aric Wheeler last week, the Journal has learned. The alleged drug dealer is Maximiliano Gonzales of Pecos, whom Valencia
has known on some level for years. Valencia has been on administrative leave since October. He also is accused of providing the
description of an undercover officer to Gonzales and with making disparaging remarks about fellow officers to the drug
suspect, according to state Department of Public Safety documents….But a lawsuit against the city of Santa Fe is in the works,
according to an attorney for Valencia who claims his client was the victim of entrapment on the part of "administration higher-
ups." Albuquerque attorney Alvin Garcia told the Journal the actions taken against Valencia were a product of a "retaliation"
against his client "for reporting corruption (within the department) and not participating in cover-ups." "He was warned that
things would come back to bite him," Garcia said. "And they
have."https://www.abqjournal.com/news/state/03232436934newsmetro02-03-10.htm
Valtierra, Robert (1989) Albuquerque Excerpt from Real Crimes: 1/27/89: PETER KLUNCK KILLING (Albq. PD): Peter was shot by
three members of the APD ROP Team – Robert Valtierra, Paul Heatley, and Matt Griffin -- on the day he was scheduled to
appear in court and had told people he was planning to “blow the lid off APD.” Friends assert that Peter had been involved in
criminal activities with Officer Griffin and now wanted out. Police released a statement that Peter was shot in the chest in self-
defense. In truth, he was shot three times in the back. Officer Steve Nakamura, who did not fire at Peter, said Peter was
unarmed. “These guys shot him in the back and I don’t know why!” he told his sergeant.

Vigil, Isaac (2014) Tucumcari. NMSP Officer. Domestic Violence. http://krqe.com/2014/08/15/nmsp-officer-arrested-on-
domestic-charges/
Vigil, Robert Espanola, previously of Cuba. Excerpt from Santa Fe New Mexican-2015-06/04: The family that was the subject of the
raid is suing the city of Española and several police officers, claiming they lied in a 2010 affidavit to obtain a search warrant on
the family’s double-wide mobile home. The affidavit, citing information from a confidential informant, said the home was being
used to manufacture methamphetamine. Some 40 officers, including a New Mexico State Police SWAT team, surrounded the
home in the early morning hours of May 12, 2010, and pulled the family out at gunpoint. But police found nothing illegal. The
family claims Robert Vigil, the officer who obtained the search warrant, made up the informant. Vigil had a documented
history of unprofessional conduct — including complaints from the public — when he was an officer in Cuba, N.M. It is unclear
if the Española Police Department did a background check on Vigil before hiring him.Former Cuba Police Chief Jason Griego said
he never received any inquiries from the Española Police Department about Vigil. An Española city human resources director
said in a 2013 deposition in a different case that she had no record of Vigil undergoing a psychological evaluation when he was
hired.Griego said he’s barred from commenting on Vigil’s past performance beyond stating whether or not he would rehire Vigil
as an officer. The answer to that question, Griego said, is a resounding “no, definitely not.”According to records obtained by The
New Mexican, Griego disciplined Vigil numerous times during the nearly two years that Vigil worked in Cuba between 2007 and
2008. Griego also demoted Vigil from the position of captain.“I have received numerous complaints in reference to your
interpersonal skills,” Griego wrote in a Feb. 22, 2008, letter in which he informed Vigil he was being stripped of his rank. “It is my
hope that you see this as an opportunity to self reflect and come to terms that not everyone who has come to me with the
same complaints, as to the way you treat them and talk to them, are wrong.” According to Cuba Police Department records,
Vigil was docked eight hours of compensatory time for unprofessional conduct, stripped of his privilege to take his patrol car
home for failing to maintain the vehicle, reprimanded for failing to complete assigned tasks and forced to apologize to a citizen
who reported Vigil had threatened to beat him up...Police officials said at the time that Rapatz must have been tipped off, but
Rapatz’s lawyer claims in court documents that operation “Sweet Revenge” was cooked up by Vigil and Officer Danny Pacheco,
whose mother and father were Rapatz’s neighbor and had been feuding with him, according to the lawsuit. Robert Cole, the
attorney representing the city in the lawsuit, told the judge in an April 23 email that Vigil claimed the confidential informant’s
file was destroyed in 2013 by Lt. Christian Lopez when he left the department.

Transportation Police Officer Chris Webb is being sued for allegedly using the weapon on the boy during a May 4 “career day” at
Tularosa Intermediate School. The complaint reportedly states that Webb asked a group of boys during the school’s career day
who would like to wash his patrol car. All the boys responded they would, except when the 10-year-old identified as R.D.
jokingly said he wouldn’t.Taser used on 10 year old. Excerpt from Albq Jrnl-2013/08/15-By Scott Sandlin. Officer said incident at
career day was an accident. The state has settled a lawsuit brought on behalf of a 10-year-old boy who was Tasered by an
officer in the New Mexico Motor Transportation Police during a career day at his Tularosa school. U.S. Magistrate Judge William

Wilson, Oliver (11/7/2013) Santa Fe, New Mexico State Police Officer. Shot/Killed Jeanette Anaya; a questionable person was in
the car with her - a person of interest in a homicide case. From Us Gun Violence: Questionable traffic stop; high speed chase;
emotional cop fired several rounds, two of which hit and one or both killed her; she apparently did not stop because she had a
warrant out for a minor misdemeanor involving concealed identity; she had cocaine in her bloodstream: : “District Attorney
Angela “Spence” Pacheco said based on video recorded by a dashboard camera in Wilson’s car, Anaya hadn’t committed any
traffic violation…Teresa Anaya said her daughter was murdered and the State Police officer who fired the fatal shots in the
high-profile case was “enraged” and had “lost control.” Muñoz also said he didn’t think Anaya had committed any violations
before the chase began. Excerpt from NM In Depth-2016/03/23-by Jeff Proctor: There’s no question that Jeanette broke several laws
that night. Yet her family says the system fell down. Wilson “needed to be held accountable for what he did,” says Teresa.
Asked about Teresa’s criticism of the process used to clear Wilson, Pacheco pauses for several moments. “I can understand her
feeling that [the grand jury presentation] wasn’t a fair representation of what occurred,” she says. “There is not an efficient or
good process in the state of New Mexico to deal with police shootings.” Excerpt from Santa Fe New Mexican 2014/04/08-by
Phaedra Haywood: Anaya’s family has filed a tort claim notice, advising the state that she is prepared to file a civil suit over her
daughter’s death. Her attorney said the family might also pursue a lawsuit in federal court, alleging violations of Jeanette
Anaya’s civil rights. But right now, they want “justice.” For Teresa Anaya, justice means criminal charges for Officer Wilson for
fatally shooting her daughter and changes to a system that allows the New Mexico State Police, rather than an outside agency,
to investigate its own officer-involved shootings. She said justice also means more and better officer training on the use of force
and more rigorous screening for police officers. “Police officers should be subject to the same laws as the rest of us,” she said,
“whether they hold a gun and a badge or not.”
